I relocated my family from Phoenix, Arizona to Houston, Texas in 2006. We purchased an older home built back in the 80′s with a lot of large oak trees on the property shading most of the yard. This is a guy that had spent most of his life in the desert so this was our paradise.
It was a big house and we had big plans to update it so we spent the first few months just working on the cosmetics. The work was done by our 2 youngest children Brad and Kendra, my wife and myself. New flooring, new counter tops, new plumbing fixtures, new lighting, new appliances, etc. We also had assistance from family members that came in from other states to help from time to time. We planned a big family reunion our first Christmas, in Houston. It would be a double celebration. First to celebrate Christ’s birthday and the second to celebrate my in-laws 50th wedding anniversary. We would have over 30 people staying in our home for the holidays.
Well, to get to the point. Our first full month’s electric bill came in the mail. It was $1,241.51. That was for the month of September of 2006. Now, I have to qualify this by saying we were performing a lot of labor intensive projects inside the house. Doors constantly being opened and closed. We ran the air colder than normal just to keep us comfortable during our days of labor. It was very grueling but it was also very gratifying. As you get to know me through this blog you will find, I will tackle anything if it only requires some common sense and a little grunt work. The following months were getting in to winter so the electric bills calmed down some but still higher than they should be. Needless to say, my attention turned to how we can get this electric bill under control. This is now, the spring of 2014 and my electric bill has not exceeded $300/month in over 2 years.
2006-2007 Our first full 12 months of electric bills totaled = $8,022.72
2013-2014 Our past full 12 months of electric bills totaled = $2,539.46
I will explain in further blogs how this was accomplished.
